Mindi Abair - It Just Happens That Way

You're missing out if you haven't heard saxophonist Mindi Abair's GRP record debut "It Just Happens That Way".

With the influence of a musical father who played saxophone and keyboards and plenty of on the road experiences with him at a young age, it probably wasn't much of a problem deciding what Mindi Abair was going to do with herself. Pursuing music as her livelihood was "in the process" before she really new it... Deciding to attend the world renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston was not a difficult choice either--as it offered the freedom of choosing many different musical avenues that a student could take. Being influenced by top 40 pop music, RnB, jazz, and soul music, this was the obvious choice for Abair.

Once graduating from Berklee, Abair would move to LA, play jam sessions and form a band playing her original compositions creating enough buzz on the LA scene to land her gigs with folks like Jonathan Butler, Bobby Lyle, Adam Sandler, Mandy Moore, and the Backstreet Boys.

With Abair's influences of Pop, jazz and R&B, "It Just Happens That Way" sports plenty of catchy melodies and grooves, a fresh sound, with a processed, gritty edge to it, and well represents a current sound of instrumental pop in the smooth jazz genre.

In her saxophone sound and style you can hear a strong David Sanborn influence, and in some of her compositions like "Save the Last Dance", "As Good As It Gets", one might get a Dave Koz vibe or two...

Some Jazz-Pittsburgh.com favorites are "Lucy's", "Flirt", "Right On", and "Play". We here at Jazz-Pittsburgh.com look forward to hearing more from Mindi Abair in the future...
